Dear everyone:

My name is Lei Yu and I was one of the Network students during March 24- April 6 in Emma Willard School this year. I had such a wonderful time there and had been taught a lot by everyone, students and faculty! Here I really want to thank you for making me such a great time! And I also would like to tell my view point on Emma as this is the basic idea of Network exchange!^ ^

No need to mention the old castles, no need to mention various class resources for students to choose from, no need to mention all the fantastic facilities, I want to tell you all the spiritual side that I saw in every Emma Willarder here! ^ ^

Ms. Hoffer, my Drawing & Painting Portfolio I teacher, has told us about her deeply touched feeling during class. It became my best description of girls in Emma: respectful, and careful. Yes, respect! I received thousands of respects during my two weeks! And even more cares! From the beginning: Ms. Mossop picked us in the airport and took care of us till the end; my room mate Shelley left a very warm letter and prepared bed and all the stuff for me; my dear house parent Katie gave me such good care and love. Each student greeted to me very friendly when responding my greeting. When I want to join their conversation, they would always be open and treat me as their friend and talk with me very closely like we are never strangers to each other. Their respect also appeared in a very small but amazing way. I really want to thanks each of them here!

Kayla: When I went to the Anime Club to watch movies with them, she, the leader of the club, stood up and left the table, pulled a chair, dragged it to me, and invited me to sit down! It’s such an unbelievable heart-warming behavior! How great and wonderful it is for a teenager to do this! I wonder what kind of experience and education can lead to such a good personality!

Jordan, the kind and strong(physical^^) girl in my gym class, taught me how to play cross voluntarily and therefore helped me did a great job in the class; another pretty girl in my English III class (forgive me for my poor ability of memorizing names! ) not only told me the direction I want but also guided me to there!

Mr. McCorkle! Who gave me so many helps, led me to the world of programming, and treated me using his true heart as what I could feel clearly! Thank you so much, for the patient teaching from the beginning, to the kind donut party! And thanks Jia and Christy! You all are such good partners! Thank you all for all the helps and shares too!

Joining the Fair Trade team made me knowing Yvonne. She’s such an amazing and nice girl! I knew her from her very detailed and warm email of the introduction of community service meeting. I was so surprised when she even came to my room just for telling me no need to worry about the meeting tomorrow on Wednesday and just have fun. I had such a good time in her team and doing all the stuff for fair trade! Do you remember the delicious coffee in the dining hall? It’s the result from their work! I recommend you to join them now^^. (Because they need more members to help the trade!)

And I knew Amy--her sister--later too. It’s a funny story because I mistaken them at the first time, just as anyone else did. We had a good time doing homework and talking about issues together in her little but warm room^^. We’re even sharing ideas till now! She’s so strong and always telling herself to be optimistic, and she’s really being a better person everyday in every aspect! She works so hard and trying so hard, but the most important thing is what she told me about her basic purpose in her life: helping others, to prevent them from walking in the same old miserable way as her. Helping others, and trying her best to help. She has moved me so much! She’d like to make friends with more and more people. To know more about others and also makes more people to know her heart. I am one of them. She and Yvonne treated me as a true and close friend. Thanks them for making me a wonderful time with them! And Amy really becomes the closest friend to me that I made in Emma!

Tara: my proctor, she’s an amazing girl, open, friendly, and strong from her deep heart. I believe she’ll become a successful person one day in the future! I enjoyed so much talking with her everyday in check-in time! And I believe that everyone who lives in H2 has same feeling as me!

Thanks Yukiko too! Everyone knows her in Emma I bet! What I want to say is that she’s not only an incredible calligrapher but also a wonderful friend! She’s mild, lively and active! And she’s as cute as her pretty room^^.

I have to mention Lei Ma here! How’s that possible to find a person who has same name as you, in Chinese character?! We have like 20 different combinations of words for same pronunciation in Chinese. There’re 20,000 population in my hometown back to China but I had ever met a person who has same character as me! Moreover, she’s such an independent and strong-minded girl. Talking with her is such an enjoyable thing and such a good time to gaining more knowledge of a fulfilled life! Wish she’ll have a wonderful future and achieve all her goals and dreams! And for now, for everyone who’s reading this, as she’s known as an environmentalist, let’s remember the 3R: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! And let’s do more for our earth and environment!

And thank you Surary! I appreciate you so much for scarify your time of studying for tests in order to let me have the chance to go to New York City! You’re so selfless and so great! Because of you I achieved my dream of going to NY City! Best wishes for you on your academy! And have a great experience in Emma!

Ms. Katie, you’re such a kind house parent! Thank you for taking care of me so much! Thank you for your delicious pies! I would like to sit down and chat with you about pets about figuline about movies again! And wish you have a best time in the future wherever you will be!

Ms. Biggins! I miss you so much after I got back! That was a wonderful afternoon talking to you and Karie! So nice to share memories and experiences with you! And thank you for all your help and kindness^^! Wish you will have a wonderful time in the rest of the year! And hope we will talk to each other again in our life!

Ms. Hoffer! Thank you for your kindness from heart! And thanks the whole art class! I will keep the card from you all with your precious signatures and blessings forever! And also the cute doll of Van Gogh forever! Also, the world of art is becoming wider in my head after receiving each single knowledge from you and my excellent classmates! Thanks!

Dr. Spiro, you’re such a brilliant lady! You would be the best representative of the word “respect” in my mind without doubt! Choir is such an inspiring activity, especially with you! You’re smiling all the time, enjoying the piano all the time, trying her best to remember everyone’s name and pronounce everyone’s name without any mistake. You’re also admirable that you never thought admitting and correcting your mistake to all the kids who sitting there and watching you is shameful. Such a generous and wide heart! Hope I will learn even 1% from your excellence! And thanks for the coming CD! I’m looking forward to it all the time!

Ms. Montana, Mr. and Ms. Leibson, Ms. Barbone, Ms. Parry, Mr. Rowe, Ms. Hoffer, Mr. MaCorkle, Mr. Rich, thanks every of the teachers for every of their helps and shares of knowledge! I learned so many from them while my stay! From art to English, from computer to PE, from academy to the way of living.

And more people, and more! Thanks! Heidi, Beatrice, Shelley, Vicky, Marisa, Karie, Edith, Yeon, Wendy, Sima, Robin, Mangpo, Cat(allow me call you so^^), Madison, Emily, Anoushka, and Hope! You all are so nice and are so amazing girls! The future is in your hands! Go for it! And thanks Casey and Anita! It’s such an happiness to know you all in my life! Hope you all enjoy the time in Emma Willard as much as me! I’ll never forget you all! And enjoy the rest of the school year and have a fabulous summer vacation! Especially, and most importantly, thanks to Ms. Mossop. Because of her every of us had this wonderful chance in our lives; because of her our time became so fluent; because of her, we had no regrets left in Emma! Thanks for all of her works and efforts for making our experience better and greater in Emma! It took so much time of her to arrange every single process for us! And she never showed impatience to us at all! Hope she will enjoy the best of the rest of her year!

At same time, what I saw in Emma Willard also made me have to think.

Why? Why students are so respectful? No matter who you are? Why they can think for you so much and so considerately? What makes them to do this? A wonderful circumstance of respect and a sense of true love of life? Outstanding education? Or a special program to cultivate them making such an attitude to others and to life? I wonder!

Why? Why students are so devoted to and are so serious about every class? Even when facing to some very tough stuff they are still paying full attention to their assignment and teachers explanation, and express their own valuable opinions on class. Even some students can’t focus every second, they’re still trying to understand and trying to join discussion, and they never tried to do things that are not related to the class. Why? I believe it’s another kind of respect, respect of teacher and knowledge. And also the consciousness of the importance of knowledge, and the consciousness of what they’ll get behind the knowledge.

And more. Why all the students are working so hard? Every. No one said I give up I don’t want to do this I hate working I can’t work. They are all working. What makes them to do this? Also, why students have no barriers with new people? Is that because they live in big city therefore having a bigger sight and a wider heart? Is that because Emma Willard has such a significant diversity that makes students there easier to accept new ideas and unfamiliar faces? Is that because so many after school activities makes them to be used to meeting all kinds of people and they’re used to view everything in a wider sight? Why?

I really want to find the answer. Not for a summary of my trip; not for a answer of curiosity. It’s for the seeking of true meaning of life. Everyone’s life. How to live a positive, optimistic life, with loves from each other and to each other. Please help me here, everyone in Emma Willard School. And we’ll have enough chances to do this in our life!

Nothing is perfect in this world. We all know. I usually prefer to view things in a positive and affirmative way. However for a good comment we also have to find out the opposite side as we know that side must exist. We can’t only have one voice, we must have different opinions from different perspectives. As what I just learned: “Difference of opinion leads to enquire, enquiry to truth.” “Truth” is not a very appropriate word here; we need improvement.

First of all, students work hard, and work too hard. Most of them rarely go to bed before 12 o’clock at night. They have to work most of the time or keep themselves in the working mode. The lack of sleeps is tolerable but is also easy to make them suffer the reaction of their bodies because of the insufficient sleeping time. You can hardly focus, your brain does not function as well as usual, you even do something looks silly which you’ll never do when you are very conscious. However, we even can’t say working hard is negative. Students work for their goals, dreams. They scarify their entertainment in early life for a better career and a better condition in the future. They are working for that. We can only say that if you want to gain something have to lose another thing. And gaining or losing, up to you.

Secondly, I have to say it sadly. In my school, Pinewood Prep School in South Carolina, I saw the generous freedom that is given by every teacher to students to let us express our ideas no matter where and when. I can feel it in Emma too! However not all the time. Maybe it’s the disadvantage of all the old things. It is just like my country China. We have such a deep culture which is from the 5000-year history. At same time the long history also brings us so many rules to limit our thoughts and behaviors, in the name of “propriety” and “reputation”. America is such a young boy. He has so many hopes and he’s so active and creative. Under the sky of freedom, no one puts countless limits to each other. What I would like to say for Emma Willard is, academy is important, theory is important, true experience of forefathers is important, however the freedom of research in every possible way and the ability of finding answer by oneself is also important. I may made some misunderstanding here as I’m not mature and wise enough to see everything clearly. However if the reality is not as what I thought, I would also like to bring it to everyone’s attention. Bring the consciousness of an open hearing of different ideas and young thoughts.

Finally, I heard that every teacher and advisor would write direct comments of students. It is a good way to let students to view what they have done in a wider way and to make them improve. However I also heard that someone got hurt because sometimes teachers give too rough comments. In my opinion, it’s OK. Because that you have to accept the rough aspect of life. However, my mom also told me that girls should be brought up and turned into mature more by love, not by critiques. Critiques are necessary, for becoming a strong person. At same time we also need love, understanding and consideration. It is necessary to let students know their shortcomings, however I really recommend teachers take care of their tender hearts too. To let them feel the love all the time! Thanks!

1.

My little cousin likes to cry. When he cries he faces to the sky that you can only see his mouth.

Everyone laughs and asks, "Why do you still cry? You are a big boy now."

Today there was a little piece of paper fell out from his book bag. People in the class doubted he didn't pay attention to class. He objected at once, "It is not written by me!"

"OK. It's not you." Adults tittered.

"You all don't believe me--" His tears fell again.

2.

I went to his room to console him.

He broke out, "I can't bear this world anymore!"

"What?!" I was surprised and wanted to laugh (as it was spoken out by such a little boy).

He was agitated that even couldn't control his words, "Everyone is blaming me, always. The leader of bad guys in my class teases me very often, too. I left and went out from my family since I was six years old. Other kids can learn from their parents but I can only depend on myself and figure out things by myself. When I do something wrong people would always say: 'You're wrong. You're wrong.' "

--He left his own home and studied outside since he was very young. He has changed school for five times-- in order to find a better one.

I coaxed him: "Perhaps they put more expect on you."

"However no one encourages me. Never."

He lives on campus. Every weekend he has to go to class that teach kids questions from Olympic Math Competition. In the afternoon the high-level English class is waiting for him. And an all-rounded course in a prestigious middle school. And even a class of learning four-wheelers(not big four wheelers, small ones like toy, you have to control its direction and trying to let it run faster than others in order to win)—the coach will come to his home teaching him every week, if he could get the national champion, extra credits would be added when he goes to the exam for entering middle school after finish elementary school.

There is a kid in his class gets forty certifications of forty different skills. Another kid has already got the certification of high level English (which is a college class course).

This year, we didn’t go to swim or play ping-pang anymore.

“Aunt told me one third time in you life should be used for study, and another one third time has to be painful. Is that right?”

“Er……Everyone has to go through this process.”

“But it is too torturous.”

“You are a smart boy. You will overcome it.”

His tear, which was dried a moment ago, came again. “I’m stupid.”

“Who said this?”

“Smart kids are those who can solve math questions.”

“No.”

“Teachers think this way. Only good students are students. We are not students. We are only people who merely sit in the classroom.”

A twelve-year-old kid, was teaching me philosophy while crying, “Yao Ming (the basketball player in NBA, team Rocket, from China) is popular now. However if you only want centers who would cultivate point guards?”

I wanted to laugh but I dared not.

“Sister, when you are young were there someone who encouraged you?” He looked at me with his eyes full of tear.

I don’t know how to say. I can only help him to wipe tears out from his little plump face.

3.

One day I mentioned my show “Growth of Heart” to him.

A little fat boy named Song Yu has been in it.

Song’s psychologist told me: “He loves eating so much because he’s used to plug up his mouth by food when he feels angry.”

Song nodded and said with a serious voice, “Sister, therefore I become a fatso now.”

He said with tension, “Sister, do you know that I can not fall asleep until twelve o’clock every night. Sh……don’t tell anyone else.”

“Crying is kind of abreaction(release) for me. I could not bear without abreacting.”

4.

We went out to play when Spring Festival (Chinese new year: the most important holiday), he had to stay to finish reciting English.

I entered his room.

He raised head while sitting in the chair, looking at me listlessly.

“I can bring you your four-wheelers so you can relax for a little while.”

“No. I don’t need it.”

“Why?”

“It is locked.”—Because he didn’t get the national champion.

“Do you want to watch TV for a while?”

“It is pointless and boring.”

He put down his book, and said to me using listless voice which are usually heard from adults, “Don’t care me. Just go.”

My dad left to stay along with him.

My dad coaxed him, “Let’s go and play fireworks.”

He told my dad, “Uncle, I’m gloomy. You have antipsychotic right? Please give me some.”

5.

He was 9 years old when he came to my home. He had thin hair in his forehead and you can see his bright incisor when he smiled.

It was snowing that day when I held his hands and went to eat.

He questioned me from gasoline to diplomacy, and he was still asking, “Sister, why there are so many little holes on the snow ground?”

His dad finally said, “Where are so many questions from?”

He smiled cunningly, “She is a journalist right? A journalist should know all things. I’m just testing her.”

Three years have passed then.

Now every time when he’s back from school he shrinks his neck into collar, walks by sticking with the wall, enters his room and drops his book bag. He doesn’t talk to anyone except for the time when he has good grades on test. I never saw him go out and play with kids that live downstairs in this department. Nor he called his classmates. Nor heard he said he missed someone.

Today he told me about a comic suddenly. Its name is “A Cat, Likes Looking At Mirror.”

He asked me, “Sister, do you know why I like this comic most?”

“Because the cat's best friend is himself?”

“Right.” He said.

--I remembered in that show, Song said he wrote in the mirror “you are handsome” everyday, and then wipe it out with water.

I messed his hair and told him, “I’m always your best friend!”

He nodded, and started walking around in the room, looking for some gift for me earnestly.

“Sister, you were not allowed to read books when you were young right? I lend you some books so you can read!”

He opened the bookcase with hurry-scurry, and drew out books and piled them on my knees.

“A Brief History of Time”, “For Children—From Nobel Prize Winners”, “Letter for Kids— By Bill Gates”.

His favorite three books.

I held these books and entered elevator. I forbore and forbore, however I still couldn’t stop my tears from dropping finally.

A Cat, Likes Looking At Mirror

            一
小弟弟爱哭，哭起来脸向天，只剩一张嘴。
一哭，大家都笑“这么大男孩子还哭？”
今天从书包里掉出一张纸条。大家疑心他上课开小差，他立刻瘪嘴“不是我写的”
“行，不是你”大人嗤嗤轻声笑。
他脸一皱。
“你们不相信我---”眼泪扑落扑落就滚下来了。

我去房间劝他。
他突然爆发“我受不了这个世道”
"什么？”我又惊又笑。
他激动地有点语无伦次“老说我，老说我，我们班黑帮老大也老欺负我。我六岁就出来，别的小朋友可以向父母学，我只能自己想着去做，一错了，大家就总是说你是错的，你是错的”
他从小离家，小学换了五个学校----一直在找更好的。
我哄他“也许是因为他们给你的期望比较多”
“可是没有人鼓励我。”
他住校，每个周末要报奥数班，下午是英语冲刺班，加上北大附中的培训班，还有专门的四驱车教练到家来辅导---如果拿了全国冠军就可以在小升初的时候加分。
他们班上有个孩子拿了四十多个特长证，还有孩子已经过了英语四级。
这一年，我们再没去游过泳，打兵兵球也很少。
“大姨说人生三分之一的时间都要学习，三分之一的时间必须是痛苦的吗？”
“嗯…大家都必须要经过这个过程”
“可是这个过程太痛苦了。”
“你是聪明的孩子，会度过去的”
刚干了的眼泪，又顺着脸挂下一行“我笨”
“谁说的？”
“聪明的孩子是会解题的孩子。”
“不是啊”
“老师就是这么想的，只有好学生是学生，我们不是学生，我们就是坐在这个教室里的人。”
十二岁的孩子，一边哭一边给我讲道理“姚明红了，可是要都培养中锋，那后卫谁培养啊？”
我想笑不敢笑。
“姐姐，你小的时候，有人鼓励你么？”他眼泪汪汪地看着我。
姐姐说不出话，把他胖脸蛋上的泪水擦了又擦。

有一天我偶尔跟他讲起我做的节目《心灵的成长》
里面有个小胖子叫宋禹。
宋禹的心理医生说“他这么爱吃东西，是因为他每次感到愤怒的时候就用吃的堵住自己的嘴”
他点点头，很严肃地说“姐姐，所以我现在才变成了个胖子”
他紧张地压低声音说“你知道吗，我每天晚上要到十二点才能睡着。嘘…你不要跟任何人说”
“姐姐，哭是一种发泄，不发泄我就受不了了”。

春节大家出去玩，他要在家把英文背完。
我走进他房间。
他从椅子上抬起头，冷漠地看着我。
“我给你把车拿出来玩会儿”
“不用”
“为什么？”
“都已经锁起来了”因为他没拿到全国冠军。
“那你看会儿电视好不好”
“没意思。”
他放下书，以一个成年人的冷谈说“别管我了，你们去吧”
留下我爸陪他。
我爸哄他“咱们去放炮吧”
他跟我爸说“大伯，我抑郁了，不想活了，你不是有安定吗，你给我几片安眠药吧。”

他刚来我家的时候9岁，留着细细的刘海，笑起来雪白的大板牙。
那天下雪，我牵着他手去吃饭。
一路上他从石油问到外交，又问“姐姐，雪地上为什么有那么多小窟窿？”
他爸终于说“你哪儿来那么多问题”
他狡猾地笑“她不是记者吗？记者就应该知道所有的事情，我就是想考考她”
三年过去了。
每次他回来的时候都缩着脖子，挨着墙跟进来，回屋子把书包放下。除了考试好的时候，跟谁都不爱说话。我没有见过他去跟楼下的小朋友玩过，他也从来不给同学打电话，也没有听他说过想念谁。
今天他突然跟我说起一个漫画“有只猫，最喜欢照镜子。”
问我“姐姐，你知道我为什么最喜欢这个漫画么？”
“嗯，因为它是自己最好的朋友？”
“对了”他说。
我想起节目里宋禹每天用毛笔写在镜子上“你是帅哥”，然后再用水泼掉。
我呼噜呼噜他的头发，“姐姐永远是你的朋友呀”
他点点头，开始在屋子里团团转，热切地不知要找点什么送我好。
“姐姐，你小时候不是不能看书，只能看字典吗，我借书给你看。”
他手忙脚乱地把书柜打开，把书一本本抽出来，堆在我身上。
《时间简史》《诺贝尔奖得主写给小朋友》《比尔盖茨给小朋友的信》
是他最喜欢的三本书。
我抱着这三本书进了电梯，忍了好久的眼泪，还是掉了下来。

情人节的销售策略………………

1.我们学校举行的活动就是：一，每个人可以购买糖果包，写上想说的话，然后由发送糖果的人在情人节统一送到人的手里。二，情人节舞会。这里舞会超多。

2.商店统一的巧克力降价……

3.这个是在一家音像店看到的==很奇异。音像店有这种东西。

图片上：创造你自己的情人节礼物包裹。然后桌子上是所有的女生或男生会喜欢的东西，自己选。当然你，然后付钱。

无关情人节，这个音像店有个很好的政策：你可以免费在这里交换游戏碟，只要你拿来，然后可以挑选其他游戏，在可挑选的范围里（一般是用过的游戏）。这样如果你愿意的话，你可以无限的交换下去并把所有的游戏玩遍，只花一个游戏的价钱==！

不知道这样应用到中国的话会不会增加销量，不过咱们必须做的一点是收押金==因为一定会有人不注意把东西搞坏的==b唉。

A collection of my teachers' fantatic classrooms. I really have a thought that make a competetion of every faculty's classroom. Alright, let's start!

老师的教室！

1. Dear Mr. Stone. It's still a little hard for me to pronounce his name clearly. I still remember that one time I called him "Mrs. Stone"...... He's just nice, and enjoy his life all the time! What I have to say here is, he is really a funny man.

我们的政府/经济老师，Mr. Stone.直译的话是石头先生==。真的有人送他石头的说，石头上面写着“不是在开玩笑！”。他人真的非常不错，时刻积极向上，比年轻人还有活力==。很多朋友，很爱尝试新事物，在冷战刚结束时去苏联交流==。他的人生绝对是一个有趣的人生！

2.不想参加派对的理由==。接下来的所有东西都是在他教室的墙的四周的展示。

3.一天的格言、词语、电影、歌。还有附加的一天的勇敢尝试：抱成一团藏在桌子底下并且低语5分钟==。应该是学生写的，每天都更新。不过貌似没人做来着。

5.Mr.Stone的漫画。学生画的。注意下边的那张照片！

放大图。这种精品错过太可惜了==。每次课上有人睡觉Mr. Stone都会用照相机照下来==。不过这张照片也太夸张了==b 明天去问问他。

6.一句很好的格言：不管你在哪里，拥有什么，做你能做的用你所拥有的。

7.不敢相信这个是什么==！书皮。一个学生的。上面的东西都是用手画上去的==。也不知道他们哪来这么多时间==b。

9.虽然在美国……但是这个地图是日语的==！Mr. Stone说这个是以前一个日本学生带过来的。我很疑惑，为什么偏偏要带地图？

第一幅上面指着你的那张画是一战还是二战时期美国很著名的征召人民入伍的海报：“山姆大叔需要你参军。”这里学生改成：“Mr. Stone需要你来上第三节的政府课。”==其实我还看过另一个版本，在每一个外语老师的教室前：“山姆大叔需要你：学一门外语。”外语在这里可不是英语了==+。不过同语系的欧洲语对他们来说不成问题==。我的建议是学中文==+
